Goal Three: Promotion equality and empower women

Target one: Eliminate gender disparities in primary and secondary education preferably by 2005, and at all levels by 2015.

• There is a slight gender imbalance in primary school and this imbalance had the tendency to worsen, as the net enrollment rate went between 2001 and 2002 respectively from 46.8% to 56.8% for boys and from 40% to 41.3% for girls.
• On the basis of these figures the of girls to boys in primary education has dropped from 0.85% to 0.73 over the same period.
• The proportion of seats held by women in the National Assembly has significantly changed with the recent general elections held in September 2008, reaching 41% while the proportion of women in the Government reached 33%.
