MDG Progress in Angola

Goal Six: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and other diseases

Target one: Halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV/AIDS.

  • HIV/AIDS began to be a real threat since the end of the war especially with the increased movement of populations, namely returnees coming from highly infected countries, as well as the increase in the number of people coming to visit Angola.
  • HIV/AIDS prevalence among the population aged 15-24 years is grossly remaining stable over the recent year; it was estimated at 2.8% in 2002 and 2.5% in 2005. 2.1 in 2007.
  •
  • According to the last survey, the potential for an accelerated epidemic is high as only 1 out of 5 young people aged 15-24 years has comprehensive correct knowledge of HIV/AIDS in 2005.

Target two: Halt and begin to reverse the incidence of malaria and major diseases.

  • The incidence of malaria increased from 16% in 2001 to 23% in 2003. The mortality due to malaria is decreasing from 13,000 in 2005 and 11,000 in 2007.
  •
  • The death rate associated with malaria has decreased from 13,000 in 2005 and 11,000 in 2007.
  • The morbidity caused by malaria has significantly declined over the recent years.
