Latest News and EventsThe Angolan government «Ministerio do interior: Serviço Nacional de Protecção Civil» in collaboration with UNDP organized a workshop to elaborate a national Contingency Plan to deal with crisis management. Luanda 24-26 de September 2007 - The workshop is an initiative by the Angolan Government supported by UNDP to establish strategies to deal with natural disasters, pandemics or man made disasters. The National service for civil protection is a national structure of the Angolan government responsible to manage disaster prevention. The workshop served as forum for capacity building, whereby its respective members were provided with Knowledge to tackle crisis, and to find mechanisms and solution in the prevention of crisis hence alleviating population suffering. The main objective of the workshop is to elaborate a contingency plan which serves as an instrument to respond adequately and efficiently to emergencies. Serviço Nacional de Protecção Civil is an inter-ministerial body with a wide spectrum of professionals. UNDP was solicited by the Angolan government to be an integral partner of this initiative that is in assisting the Ministry of Interior« civil protection» with expertise and technical advice for the elaboration of a contingency in order to manage natural and man made catastrophe. The coordinator of the Comissão do Serviço Nacional de Protecção Civil, General Laborinho, expressed his appreciation for the effort and the help of PNUD in imparting the expertise and technical input. He stressed also the need of the country being prepared not only with funds but also with a well trained and competent workforce to deal effectively with these emergencies. Anatololio Ndong Mba, the UN Resident Coordinator, expressed the gratitude for the United Nations to be invited as vital partner for this initiative, he spoke about the experience that UN has in crisis management, and the support that the organization can give in transferring Know How and in training the Angolan workforce. Drª Gita Welch, UNDP Director, applauded the joint-venture and manifested the interest of UNDP to be a central partner of this project. She equally stressed the need of the country be prepared to respond to disaster satisfactorily. The UN Experts and the inter-Ministerial Commission will present the contingency plan by the end of this week.
