Poverty Reduction Week - 16 to 24 October 2007

Luanda, 25 October 2007 - In the framework of the commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) that the UN celebrates worldwide every year on the 17 th of October, the UNDP Country Office mobilized the entire United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and national partners from both Government, Civil Society, the Private Sector, Academia and Media to organize a one week long advocacy campaign on Poverty Reduction.

During three weeks the UN Country Team worked together with the major stakeholders toward raising awareness on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and in the preparation of all other activities pertinent to the reduction of poverty at national level.

The UNCT started by launched a pre-campaign on 10/10/07 at CEFOJOR (Centro de Formação de Jornalistas) with an amicable and informal breakfast with the Media, whereby the UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Anatolio Ndong Mba and all the UN Chiefs of Agencies informed the National and international Media of their areas of action, talked about the work been done in Angola for achieving the MDGs and in fighting extreme poverty.

The UN emphasized also the importance of the involvement of the Media in divulging and pursues this venture.

The theme of this year was « the Role of the Private Sector in Poverty Reduction: Challenges & Opportunities» showing therefore the intention of UN endeavor of extending their partnership with all sectors of the Angolan society in the campaign to fight poverty.

The week 17 to 24 of October 2007 remained high in the National Agenda, and so corroborates the stakeholder’s commitment in achieving the MDGs. The UNCT organized diverse activities targeting different segments of the society with extensive media coverage as follow:

  • Interactive Radio debate on´´ development and dynamics of the role of private sector in the poverty reduction`` at national radio program´« Tendencias e debates» with representatives from the UN, Government, Academia and Private sector.
  • A week Exhibition of UN agencies work in Angola and film of IOM on malaria at the Portuguese Cultural Centre.
  • Publication of various UN articles in the Angola newspaper ‘Jornal de Angola’ and ANGOP News Agency.
  • Seminar with PNUD Voluntary Unit on , Enterprise Unit , Business Incubator, UN Goodwill Ambassador Paulo Flores and singer Yury Da Cunha on the ‘Role and Support of private sector in the combat of poverty and MDG’s at IMEL- Medium Institute of Economy of Luanda, attended by around 320 students and lectures.
  • UN Day cocktail, with a special concert by UN Goodwill Ambassador Paulo Flores, Special guests Ernesto Bartolomeu a TV presenter of TPA-Angola public Television and Miss Angola, Micaela Reis.
