PRESS RELEASE : ANASO receives new vehicle to support its fight against AIDS in Angola

Luanda, 06 June 2007In the quality of Executive Secretary of the National Coordinating Mechanism of Fight Against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Angola, José Dias Van-Dúnem (Health Vice-minister), delivered this Tuesday, on the 5 th of June, a vehicle Toyota Hilux to the Angolan net of organizations that fight against AIDS – known as ANASO.

This organization was represented by its Secretary General, António Coelho. The ceremony took place at the Instituto Nacional de Luta Contra a SIDA (INLS), in Luanda, and several individualities have attended: the Director of the INLS, Ducelina Serrano, her assistant Lúcia Furtado, the Administration Deputy of the INLS Victor Nzima, the Director of the National Institute of Public Health Filomena Silva, the UNDP Country Director Gita Honwana Welch, Global Fund’s Manager Jorge Romero and the Global Fund’s HIV Specialist Mário Cooper. In harmony with this activity Global Fund is also financing, with 2 million American dollars, other 18 NGOs associated to ANASO that work for prevention against AIDS.

José Dias Van-Dúnem has delivered in hand the keys of the vehicle to the Secretary General of the ANASO and explained that it is expected that ANASO increases its capacities and that "doesn’t stop its activities because the civil society has an important role to play". UNDP Country Director expects that this car helps ANASO to pursuit its challenges. She also believes that this event represents "the strengthening of the important partnership amongst government institutions, UNDP, Global Fund and ANASO". Gita Welch also expects "that this partnership continues in order to create health improvements in Angola".

The Secretary General of ANASO, António Coelho, expressed his gratitude and mentioned that this vehicle "represents the recognition of the work that ANASO has developed in the last few years against AIDS" and "will allow reinforcement of ANASO activities and a better supervision of NGOs work".
