UNDP's Presentation on the concept of partnership for inclusive private sector

Luanda, 13 September 2007 - On Wednesday, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP- Angola) organized a meeting titled " Partnerships for Inclusive Private Sector ", which took place at the Hotel Trópico, in Luanda.

The purpose of this initiative was to consult and share with various stakeholders on how to build and engage an inclusive private sector that will embrace the UN´s global strategy in promoting sustainable development, leading to poverty reduction.

The UNDP – Angola Director Dr. Gita Welch said that the involvement of the private sector in this endeavor is very important since it will help accelerate the new dynamics towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s).

Gita also added that this type of forum is crucial to share the know-how and best practices with UNDP´s government partners and other stakeholders in search of new ideas that can contribute to the formulation of policies to tackle poverty.

Ofelia Eugenio, the UNDP´s Angolan Enterprise Program Coordinator, presented the core strategies for these new partnerships and their beneficiaries. She listed the four priority areas, which are: capacity building for enterprise development, building strategic partnerships, promoting entrepreneurship and engaging stakeholders in dialogue and action.

Lucas Black, Business Outreach Coordinator, a special Guest from UNDP-NY (Private Sector Division), introduced the new initiative called "Growing Sustainable Business" or GSB.

Lucas elucidated that the GSB programme seeks to facilitate sound business solution to fight poverty through investment and development of those who are poor and are at bottom of pyramid. Lucas Black spoke of the successful experiences of GSB projects implemented in countries like Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania.

The conference was attended by various stakeholders, including Government Officials, Diplomatic Officials, Private Sector, Civic Society, NGO’s and Media.
