Brief description:

This project is to be accomplished by strengthening the functioning of laboratories through equipment and improved reporting capacity, training, enhanced administration of drugs and quality control. The project is implemented in eleven provinces in which 75% of Angola’s population is concentrated. After extending and strengthening DOTS procedures within the 2 year project, the National Tuberculosis Program (PNCT) will turn to the special circumstances that challenge DOTS expansion, such as co-infection with HIV/AIDS and multiple-drug resistance.

Expected results until June 2007:

-  78 DOTS centres created or renovated.

-  52 of laboratories with fully functioning reporting systems

- 140 of Lab technicians trained on Tuberculosis Lab management

180 of nurses trained on DOTS

- 17 000 of new smear positive patients having

- completed treatment with DOTS

- 20 000 of new smear positive cases registered under DOTS treatment, which smear converts to negative after two months of treatment

- 33 000 of smear positive cases detected

- 200 of supervisors and nurses trained on supervisory and management skills

- 80 of municipal health supervisors trained on quality management and systematic monitoring

- 20% new smear positive cases registered under DOTS who fail treatment or transfer out

- 100 of referral nurses trained on diagnosis and tuberculosis treatment

Target areas

The project is currently active in 11 provinces, starting July 2007 in all 18.
