The Angolan minister of environment backs continuation of Kyoto Protocol

Luanda – 30 November 2011 - The Angolan minister of Environment, Fátima Jardim, Wednesday in Luanda defended that the Kyoto Protocol expiring in 2012 should stay put and appealed to the industrialised countries to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Speaking to the media on the framework of the 17th UN Summit on Climate Change taking place in Durban, South Africa, the minister said she was optimistic that the event would produce good results.

“We are going to Durban optimistic that the issues related to the adjustment to climate changes in developing countries will bring big progresses, which will be influenced partly by the industrialised countries, the main responsible for pollution, and that the meeting will achieve fairer positions,” said the minister.

According to the minister, the Kyoto Protocol signatories took the commitment to protect the environment and the planet earth, speaking of the need for a combined effort to achieve established goals.

The official said that the summit, whose high level session will go from December 5-9, to decide what to do with regard to the commitment taken under the Kyoto Protocol.
