Nacissela Mauricio chosen first UNAIDS African ambassador

Luanda, 20 February 2012 - The Angolan basketball player Nacissela Mauricio became the first African ambassador to the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), to sign the certificate that joins the institution the campaign dubbed "Red Card".

The signing ceremony that took place in one of Luanda-based hotels was attended by the minister of Sports, Gonçalves Muandumba and the coordinator of UNAIDS in Angola, Ilali Camará.

The captain of the women's senior national team, who won the unprecedented African title in October 2011, in Mali, considered the post both national and African responsibility.

She expressed availability to work with national and African authorities toward finding concrete solutions to the challenges posed by this disease affecting the society.

The athlete of the 1º de Agosto, who was hailed during the last African Cup, has promised to contribute to the achievement of goal set by Angola and 21 other countries with regard to the projects focussed on elimination of the new HIV infections among children and women by 2015.

With headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the United Nations Joint Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS)  was established in 1994 aimed at coordinating efforts and resources to combat to disease.
