Angolan minister highlights government's projects to fight poverty

New York, 28 February 2012 – The minister of Family and Promotion of Women, Genoveva Lino, on Monday in New York highlighted the social projects being implemented by the Angolan government, aimed at eradicating hunger and poverty, as well as securing the wellbeing of the people, mainly in rural areas.

The information was given at a top level ministerial roundtable meeting, held in a United Nations (UN) room, in New York, which served for exchange of experiences among the delegations that participated in the 56th UN Session on the Status of Women.

The minister informed that several social indicators recently published, in relation to an enquiry on the wellbeing of the population, dubbed IBEP/2008/2009, show that the levels of people’s wellbeing in Angola, in general terms, has been increasing significantly in the past few years.

According to Genoveva Lino, the Angolan executive has been trying to empower rural women and their families, with programmes like the national micro-credit, support to rural women, municipal integrated rural development and fight against poverty, among others.

Angola is attending the forum with a delegation made up by members of the executive, members of parliament, ministerial technicians, representatives of female political organizations and professional associations.
