The minister said so while addressing the opening of commemorative activities related to the World Water Day, on March 22, under the theme "Food Security".

According to Fátima Jardim, the Angolan government has set as one of its strategic objectives the ensuring of welfare of the population and contribute to improving the public health through widespread access to drinking water supply and implementation of programmes for the collection and safe treatment of residual water.

In the agricultural sector, she said the government is promoting integrated and sustainable socio-economic development of the sector, taking into account the potential of natural resources in the country, in order to ensure food security to the population.

The official also recalled that the water management requires a balance between the imperatives of its protection and the need for economic, health and social order.

However, the minister urged the people to make a joint effort to engage, increasingly, in the challenges of reuse and recycling of water used in food production, and improve effective mechanisms to reduce water wastage.

The government minister also stressed that there are still limitations in terms of access to potable water by the population and some shortcomings in terms of food security due to the long period of war experienced by Angola.

Attended the ceremony, Angolan State Secretary for Water, Luís Filipe da Silva, national directors and senior officials of Ministry of Energy and Water, diplomats, politicians, academicians and students.
