UNDP, Angola and Norwegian Embassy sign women promotion protocol

Luanda, 9 May 2012 - The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP),the Ministry of Family and Women Promotion (Minfamu) and the Norwegian Embassy to Angola Wednesday in Luanda signed a protocol aimed at promoting and monitoring efforts focused on empowerment of women.

 

The project dubbed "Promotion of Angolan Women through the Civil Society Organisations (OCS)," consists in empowering women to better enjoy their political, social and economic rights.

According to the UNDP-Angola Resident Representative, Maria de Valle Ribeiro, women represent an important part in human rights issues. Since the struggle for independence in Angola, women gained a key role in the family, society and State.

In his turn, Jon Vea, Norwegian ambassador to Angola, said that the project also covers children who were victims of domestic violence. He noted that the Embassy of Norway is ready to support the pilot project within the framework of existing cooperation.

In her turn, Inês Gaspar, Director of Minfamu's Gender Department Policy, said that the Millennium Development Goals are aimed at the socio-economic development of states. "Goals that will only be achieved with the inclusion of women and gender approach", she ressed.

 

Attending the signing were representatives of some organizations of the civil society like Action for Rural Development and Environment (ADRA), Evangelic Congregational Church n Angola, Angolan Association for Education of Adults and UN agencies.
