International Workshop of Disarmament in Angola

Luanda, 4-5 March 2008 - The Ministry of Interior in collaboration with UNDP-Angola, organized the International Workshop of Disarmament of civilian population; the event took place at Angolan Parliament ‘Assembleia Nacional’.

The workshop is a follow up of discussion between the Ministry of Interior and UNDP-Angola on the strengthening of the mechanisms for control of small arms and light weapon, disposal of ammunition and unexploded ordnances, on the reduction of proliferation of small arms in the hands of civilians, and general reduction of the level of violence and in criminal activities supported by small arms.

The International Workshop of Disarmament aims to sensitize and mobilize the civilian population of the danger of fire arms and ammunition in the hands of unauthorized people, which can bring an adverse impact on the security and stability.

UNDP-Angola in this context would offer a vast array of experience and good practice in the implementation and establishment of the National Commission.

The Angolan Prime Minister "Nando" said that his Government are working firmly to find solution for the prevention, reduction and eradication of small arms and light weapons, he exhorted to the police and armed forces to put an effort in disarming people in possession of illegal arms as it constitute a threat on peace and security of the country, particularly when the country is preparing to undergo to a second time election, the PM and the Minister of Interior express thanks to UNDP- Angola and to the Other stakeholders involved in the process for contributing with knowledge and expertise in this dominion, they state their gratitude to UNDP-Angola for granting financial assisting to the programme.

Drª Gita Welch, UNDP-Angola Director, made a presentation on the control of small arms and light weapons and reduction of armed violence, she give an ample view of the UNDP expertise in the field, and of UNDP specific intervention on the subject matter. Gita Welch emphasized that UNDP will cooperate concomitantly as an integral partner of Angola government.

The international workshop of disarmament of civilian population brought a broad spectrum of international experts to share their countries experiences on disarming civilian in the post-conflict situation and in reduction of the proliferation of SALW, there were also a across-the-board inputs and involvement of the national institution, with the end to bring about participatory mechanisms for implementation of National Disarmament Programme.

The event was presided by the Prime Minister Mr. Fernando Dias Dos Santos ‘Nandó’, the Minister of Interior General Roberto Leal Monteiro’ N’gongo’, Vice-Minister of Interior, Chief Commander of the National Police, Dr. Anatolio N’dong M’ba UN Resident Coordinator, Drª Gita Welch UNDP-Angola Director, Members of Parliament, Civil Society, Armed force, National police, Diplomatic Corp, International/ national Media.

The International Workshop of Disarmament shed light for the first draft of disarmament strategy, which will support the strengthening of National Commission of Disarmament.
