Angolan Minister of Science and Technology seeks research in poverty reduction

Luanda, 28 February 2009 – The Minister of Science and Technology, Maria Cândida Teixeira, Friday in Luanda, called for the need of researchers to the fight of famine and poverty, in the country.

The minister made this appeal during a meeting with the directors of the country’s public science and technical research institutes.

"Scientific research is not an easy task, the reason why the Government programme should be accomplished, with the researchers contributing with their knowledge, in order to put an end to these two evils that affect humanity,” she added.

Maria Cândida Teixeira said centres and institutes are places that provide the proper forms of assistance to the Government under its responsibilities, with focus on the fight against famine and poverty, that are some of the Millennium Development Goals.

On the other hand, the minister informed that her department has appointed a commission to draft an award on science and innovation, intended to stimulate the centres and other institutions to dully perform their duties.

The meeting was aimed to a discuss matters relating to the activity of the public institutes of scientific and technological research and contribute to the strengthening of their role in the domains of science, technology and innovation.

The event was attended by directors from scientific research centres.
