Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs ends visit to Angola

Luanda - 20 October 2009 - The Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Mr. B. Lynn Pascoe, ended his two-day working visit to Angola yesterday, October 19, 2009. Before leaving, Mr. Lynn Pascoe, told the press at the Luanda airport, that the visit was based on the need to strengthen coordination of efforts for Peace and Security in the Sub-region and the continent, and expected major involvement of Angola in the process for peace, stability and economic recovery in Guinea-Bissau.

On the other hand, Mr. Lynn Pascoe, praised the commitment of Angolan authorities to the resolution of the current difference with Congo Democratic Republic, and encouraged the choice of dialogue to solve the crisis at the common border, based on the International Right.

The UN Top Official did not meet with the Angola President, José Eduardo dos Santos, as scheduled, however, on the first day, he met with the diplomatic corps accredited to Angola, and on the second, with the Prime minister, Mr. Paulo Kassoma, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Assunção dos Anjos, as well as with the National Assembly's first vice-president, Mr. João Lourenço.

 

The meeting with the Prime Minister, focused on issues relating to regional international organizations, the UN-Angola cooperation, as well as to the current difference between Angola and the two Congos (Kinshasa and Brazzaville).

Mr. B. Lynn Pascoe was also briefed about the Angola Government's social projects linked to Millennium Development Goals.

"As you are aware of, next year, a State Summit will take place, to discuss the achievement of Millennium Development Goals, and we expect Angola, as a UN member, to do everything it can, to comply with the goals", Mr. Lynn Pascoe said.

With the National Assembly's first vice-president, Mr. Lynn Pascoe discussed Angola's progresses during the last seven years, as well as the current state of political affairs, whereas, discussion on the expulsion of Angolan citizens from the Congo Democratic Republic, led his meeting with the Foreign Affairs Minister.
