Book Series
Capacity for Development: New Solutions to Old Problems is an independent study developed by UNDP experts, with contributions from a team of selected guest authors. The book is meant to inject energetic, out-of-the-box approaches to the debates surrounding technical cooperation for capacity development. The study has been developed by UNDP experts Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, Carlos Lopes and Khalid Malik, with contributions from a team of eminent experts. The book was launched at the Financing for Development Conference in Monterrey, Mexico on 20 March 2002. On the heels of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), this second book provides some concrete inputs to rethinking technical cooperation for today’s challenges based on six country studies--Bangladesh, Bolivia, Egypt, Kyrgyz Republic, Philippines and Uganda. The study was launched on 28 October 2002 at the Overseas Development Institute in London, England. It reveals an emerging consensus on how national capacity development can be best supported by technical cooperation and how the traditional donor-recipient relationship can evolve into a more even-handed partnership. It also suggests solutions where capacity development can help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
This book--the third and final in the series--bridges the conceptual foundations of capacity development, and the difficulties and practical realities in the field. It demystifies the process of capacity development to make it more "user-friendly". The book has two parts. The first shows how long-standing development dilemmas can be turned into opportunities for capacity development and societal transformation. The second part is a compilation of experiences and lessons from around the world, to showcase promising initiatives and innovative solutions.
