Green Shield
Start Date5/1/2005
End Date8/1/2005
BackgroundWorld Environment Day, commemorated each year on 5 June, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. The World Environment Day theme selected for 2005 was Green Cities and the slogan was Plan for the Planet! The agenda was to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes towards environmental issues; and advocate partnership which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future. World Environment Day is a people's event with colourful activities such as street rallies, bicycle parades, green concerts, essays and poster competitions in schools, tree planting, as well as recycling and clean-up campaigns.
Main AimsThis project aimed to inspire both the shopper and retailer to refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle plastic all year round.
DetailsGreen Shield advertised to the country the concept and positive outcome of re-using a cloth bag over one time use plastic bags. They concentrated on the reduction of use of plastic bags, and the positive impact of reducing plastic on the community and the environment. Their aim was to informing the retailer of both the economic and environmental incentives and to educate the shopper.

The project began by contacting other international groups working to stop the use of plastic bags, including: 'Planet Ark', (Australia), 'Clean-Up' (Australia), and 'Recycle Now', (London, Scotland, Wales).

They then worked on the design of a series of products including a bag, poster, stickers, information boards, booklets and a CD. They created a website and carried out research on plastic. They also compiled information packets for schools.

A large public event was organised for 5 June including painting and games for children.
ResultsThe project was carried out as anticipated and well received by retailers and consumers alike. Further details can be obtained from Green Shield.
