What UNDP is doing with regards to Community and Corporate Outreach in Kenya

This component of UNDP’s support aims at promoting strategic partnership for aid and donor coordination and advocacy initiatives related to Sustainable Human Development paradigm and its mainstreaming into the country's policy, planning and visioning frameworks. It also provides periodic analysis of and intelligence on socio-economic and trends, advocating and promoting a culture of achieving the Millennium Development Goals. Unit activities include:

-Mounting a Millennium Development Goals campaign and awareness creation.
-Media Outreach.
-Analysis of global partnership goal requirements – Debt, Aid And Trade.
-Monitoring & Evaluation of the government of Kenya’s Economic Recovery Strategy.
-UNDP and donor coordination.
-UNDP Partnership survey.

NEWS ITEM
RR launches the Media Handbook as part of the effort to Communicate Development in Kenya: 27 August 2008, The communication component of Outreach Unit supported PANOS international in launching the Handbook which can be a useful tool in forging the alliance between the media and researchers in the wake of the new coalition government. The RR stated that the book tackles a half of the problem by explaining how the media works and how researchers can use them for their benefit. Media use also carries a benefit for research in that it can help to generate support from various stakeholders while giving the public an asset. Click to read Mr Chuma's speech

   

OUTREACH PROJECTS

  • Millennium Development Goals
  • The Government officially launched its new long-term development blueprint for the period 2008 to 2030 and the first 5 year Medium Term Plan. UNDP-Kenya and the Government jointly explore this unique opportunity to address poverty and inequality by underscoring the important role of partnerships in achievement of National Development Objectives and informed by the Millennium Development Goals.

  • Communication for Development
  • Communications office focuses on highlighting, packaging and disseminating project information about the organization. In this regard, the office uses various communication tools to acheive this including; press conferences, project launches, project visits for journalists as well as editing of a series of publications. Currently, the 'Communication for Development' (C4D) project is the flagship initiative for this office.

  • Harmonization and Donor Co-ordination-HAC
  • As contributor and manager of the Resident Coordinator System, UNDP promotes a wide range of partnerships with the Government and other stakeholders within the framework of the UN Common Country Assessment and the UNDAF, and in furtherance of the principles of the Rome Declaration on simplification and harmonization. Through such coordination, UNDP has ensured the most effective use of UN and international aid resources. It also pursues collaborative and joint programmes, supports joint monitoring activities, and undertakes annual programme review meetings in close collaboration with all partners. At the national level, UNDP seeks programmatic linkages to national sectoral and thematic groups and other structures within the framework of the Kenya coordination group and the donor coordination groups respectively, under the leadership of both the Ministry of Finance and the World Bank.

  • Pro-poor Macro Policies

This activity promotes upstream policy dialogue and advocacy for poverty eradication and sustainable human development . It is engaged with networking and partnership building for learning and knowledge management by promoting and coordinating policy dialogue with the government, partners and key stakeholders on links between macro-economics, poverty and reforms.
