Greater Horn Of Africa Rural and Pastoralists livelihood Review.

A review meeting was held between 15-16 september in Nairobi. It was aimed at building regional understanding and consensus on critical issues of pastoral and agro-pastoral development in the Greater Horn of Africa. WFP through support from UNDP-Kenya, has started a study to understand why the pastoralists and agro-pastoralists have in recent past become very vulnerable group in need of constant supply of Food Aid in Africa. For the in depth understanding of the challenges facing the pastoralists and agro-pastoralist the study focused on the critical aspects of access to pasture, water, market as well as pastoral coping strategies. A comprehensive analysis of the pastoralists and agro-pastoralists vulnerability also include looking at socio-economic, political and environmental indicators relevant to pastoralist and agro-pastoralist. WFP therefore needed to share the study findings with key stakeholders so as to get national governments, the humanitarian community and donors to coordinate their responses.
