UNDP Liberia Country Programme

During 2008, the CO reviewed and aligned its programmes to the PRS and the United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF). All UNDP programmes have been categorized under two broad pillars of the PRS, Democratic Governance, and Pro-Poor Economic Development. These two pillars are operationalized through four sub-components,  1) State Capacity and Institutional Strengthening and 2) Peace and Security Consolidation, which are clustered under Democratic Governance, as well as 3)Economic Policy and Management and 4) Sustainable Local Economic Recovery, which are clustered under Pro-Poor Economic Development.

The objectives of the programme are twofold,

  1. To enhance national and local capacity to articulate, formulate and implement policies and programmes  for the promotion of democracy and the consolidation of peace and security in a manner which is participatory, gender-sensitive and accountable; and

  1. To contribute to the implementation of national economic policies and programmes designed to support equitable, inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development during Liberia’s recovery process.

Underlying these objectives is an overarching goal of building national capacity that is the single most important priority for post-conflict reconstruction and development.

The transition from six strategic areas to two thematic pillars was aimed at ensuring alignment of the CO’s programmes to both the Government priorities and UNDP’s corporate strategic plan. Strong emphasis has been placed on identifying opportunities for UN joint programming in key cross cutting themes as Gender, HIV and AIDS, Volunteerism, and Capacity Development. Joint efforts are guided by the shared goals of enhanced national ownership, advocacy for an enabling policy environment and partnerships for cross-cutting issues.

UNDP's activities in Liberia fall within six corporate thematic areas:

Democratic Governance
Poverty Reduction
Crisis Prevention & Recovery
Environment & Energy
HIV/AIDs
Women’s Empowerment and
Capacity Development
