While in Liberia, Miss Clark will hold bi-lateral discussions with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, the Special Representative of UN Secretary General, Ellen Margrethe Løj, senior government officials, heads of UN agencies in the country and representatives of donor institutions. MRU Countries Support Establishment of Youth Volunteers Scheme Monrovia, Liberia: May 26, 2009: Delegates at the just ended sub-regional conference on the establishment of a National Youth Volunteer Schemes in the Mano River Union (MRU) have recommended the establishment of an effective sensitization program to inculcate a sense of patriotism among youth in the sub-region for effective engagement in the development process. They said the current structure of the National Youth Volunteer Service (NYVS) managed by the Ministry of Youth and Sports should be maintained and strengthened through the provision of annual budgetary support by the government. Participants also stressed the need for strong political will on the part of government and a legal framework that will govern the NYVS programme. full story.. Government of Denmark Commits $22 Million to Joint Programmes Monrovia, Liberia: 7 May 2009: : The Government of Denmark has committed $22 million dollars to support three joint programmes signed between the government of Liberia and United Nations agencies in the country. Government and Six UN Agencies signed Joint Programme on CST Monrovia, Liberia – March 23, 2009: The Government of Liberia and six United Nations agencies recently signed a joint programme in support of the County Support Team project. A project is aimed at strengthening the capacity of sub-national administrations in Liberia. Over the next 2 years, the joint programme will increase its capacity building support and activities to enhance county level administrative, technical and institutional capacities, especially in areas of local statistics, information management and monitoring and evaluation, rehabilitation and construction of public buildings as well as providing and utilizing ICTs to enhance sub-national service delivery. The UN agencies who signed the joint programme include UNDP, UNICEF, UNHCR, UNOPS, UN-Habitat and UNMIL. full story.. New Report Recommends Increase in Agricultural Productivity Monrovia, Liberia- March 20, 2009: The 2008 Millennium Development Goal Report for Liberia issued today has attributed the poverty level in the country to low agricultural production and productivity, limited employment opportunities, limited access to health care and other social and production services as well as the non existence or weak safety nets in the country. The report says the prolonged intermittent conflict has undoubtedly disrupted agricultural production and undermined food security and contributed to the increasing trend in poverty. full story.. Volunteers Savings and Lending Associations Established in Bong County Monrovia, Liberia – February 23, 2009: The United Nations Volunteer (UNV) Programme has concluded the distribution of stationeries including cash boxes to four newly established Volunteers Saving and Lending Associations (VSLA) in Salala District, Bong County. A Capacity Needs Assessment for implementation of Liberia’s Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan project signed Monrovia, Liberia: 5 February 2009: The Government of Liberia and UNDP have signed a project agreement to support capacity needs assessment for the implementation of Liberia’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan and to establish a country-driven biodiversity Clearing House Mechanism. The agreement signed on Wednesday in Monrovia is valued at $244,000 USD and will help in strengthening the process of assessing progress at the national level towards the 2010 target and implementation of the biodiversity strategic plan. full story.. |
