2005 : The Brekathrough Year

Urgent action is needed in 2005 if we are to usher in a decade of bold ambition to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
The 2005 World Summit

The 2005 World Summit was the largest gathering of world leaders in history. From September 14-16, more than 100 Heads of State met at the United Nations to forge an action plan for promoting international security and for achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

The final Summit outcome document provided a global endorsement of the Millennium Development Goals, and built on the major international agreements of recent years, including:

the 2002 International Conference on Financing for Development in Monterrey, Mexico PDF

Meeting the long-standing donor commitment to contribute just 70 cents of every $100 of income to the fight against poverty can generate the funding needed for developing countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

'The Millennium Village' approach draws upon the leading science-based action plan to fight poverty in rural Africa and meet the Millennium Goals by 2015.
The G8 Gleneagles Summit: Key Outcomes
In July 2005, G8 leaders agreed to double aid to Africa by 2010 and eliminate debts for the poorest countries.

UN Millennium Project Reports

Investing in Development brings together the core recommendations of the UN Millennium Project. By outlining practical investment strategies and approaches to financing them, the report presents an operational framework that will allow even the poorest countries to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

Trade and Development

In the lead up to the Sixth WTO Ministerial Conference (to be held in Hong Kong from 13-18 December) Trade for Development, the report of the UN Millennium Project's Task Force on Trade, makes a strong case for a multilateral trading system that is more supportive of economic growth and poverty alleviation in developing countries and puts forward a set of goals to be accomplished by the ongoing Doha Round as well as longer term objectives for the trading system to achieve by 2015 and 2025.
