Mushtaque Chowdhury
Dr. Mushtaque Chowdhury is Director of the Research and Evaluation Division
of BRAC in Bangladesh, one of the largest non-governmental development organizations
in the world, which is particularly concerned with poverty alleviation, education,
and health. Dr. Chowdhury has played an important role during the broad introduction
of Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) by BRAC in Bangladesh. He is an internationally
acknowledged expert on community-based health care for diarrhoeal diseases, Directly
Observed Therapy Short Courses (DOTS) for tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, immunization,
as well as prevention programs in sexual and reproductive health in South Asia.
In addition, Dr. Chowdhury has published extensively on the role of women in community-based
healthcare, nutrition, primary education, and poverty alleviation. He has been
a regular consultant to governments in South Asia and Africa as well as multilateral
organizations including UNICEF, the World Bank, and the Red Cross. Dr. Chowdhury
is an Executive Committee member of the Society for International Development
(SID), Bangladesh Chapter. He holds a Ph.D. from the London School of Hygiene
and Tropical Medicine.
